Event Type

The tale of Western Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, a 3,000-year history of war and seafaring, culture and commerce, liberalism and resistance. Helen Crisp and Jules Stewart offer a vibrant account of Cádiz past and present, from its ancient founding myths to its reinvention as a trendy tourist destination. They illuminate Cádiz’s experiences under Roman and Moorish rule; explore its centuries of maritime warfare, and probe its role in Spain’s ‘Golden Age’ of empire. As Spain’s de facto capital during the Peninsular War, Cádiz also produced Europe’s first liberal constitution in 1812. And in 1936, it was the port of entry for Franco’s troops. Cádiz has excited the passions of travellers for centuries.

Helen Crisp is an experienced manager, trainer, writer and editor. She has been exploring the hidden corners of the Worlds great cities for more than twenty-five years. Jules Stewart has written books on a variety of subjects from the Anglo-Afghan wars to histories of Madrid, the NYPD, the North-West Frontier, Prince Albert and New York City. Some are also available at Secret Kingdoms.

The event is of interview format, drinks and snacks will be served and there will be a book signing. Whilst it is free, places are limited and we do request you buy a 3€ voucher, redeemable at the event.
